GRE:ISSUE 26

TOPIC: ISSUE26 – “Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society’s past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served.”

There is a hot debate in Xianyang, a city in Northwest of China. Some people are calling for remove a old tower, which is in the center park of the city, planed to build a new supermarket there. Some people support the position of some experts, who suggest that the government should protect the old building ate any cost because we cannot give modern development precedence over the preservation of historic buildings even though the contemporary needs seems be urgent. There are lots of similar problems trouble the government and the public in the cities which have a long history. I belive the preservation of old building should be set the highest priority becasue it is hard for us to assess the value of these buildings while we can estimate the value of some the new buildings.

Few will deny, old buildings occupy special position for a coutry, or for a city, even a small city. It is the token of a nation, such as Status of Liberty, which is supposed to be the symbol of Unated States. The Great Wall is regarded as the spirit of Chinese. The esthetical value of old building should never be underestimated, the Forbidden City, the Suzhu Park, which attracted the tourists around the world because of its special beauties. The new buildings, which can practically benefit our life, serve as a poor substitute of old buildings in these aspects.

Accordingly the destroy of old builing is far beyond the lost of one building, it is the loss of the craft of our predecessor; the lost of national spirit; the lost of the something which can drive home an understanding of national values and a committe to national loyalty. Though new building seems more useful for the people in the short time but its value pales when compared with the old buildings in a long time. Therefore, I believe we should do all what we can do to preserve the old buildings, it is the responsibility of contemporary, and it is the responsibility of every generation.

Funtunately, we have found some effective way to preserve the old buildings. First, we can modify the plan of current building to avoid the confliction between the old buildings and old buildings. It is said that JingJiu, one famous railway project, change its rout to avoid affection of a tomb which is build in two thousands years ago at the cost of building extra 2 kilometers. Second, the current technology make it possible to move the old buildings to give way to the new buildings. Third, the old building can be rebuild in another place, which serve as a copy of the initial one if cannot be moved as a whole. And to build a new building near the old building the designer has to learn something of the old building to guarantee the new building can harmonious exist with the old building in style and asthetics.

In sum, I definitly disagree with the assertion that mordern development can has higher priority over the old buildings when the old building stand on the ground that modrn planners feel can be used for modern purposes, though we have to build the new building to satsify the need of contemporary’s life. We have to be more careful when decide to destroy something than to creat a new thing, because when cannot restore it when being destructed, but we can creat another one if we think it is necessary in the future.

4. Historic buildings that tell the national story, emphasizing distinctive feature of the national experience, are meant to drive home an understanding of national values and a commitment to national loyalty.
Terracotta,China’s first dynasty, warriors figuring, one of the greatest wonders.
Ex:The great wall
Ex: Statue of Liberty, token of USA
4> The sense of beauty. Ex:The Forbidden City.
Destroying our past has costs that extend far beyond money. Lost is the work of talented craftsmen who created beautiful, lasting buildings. Lost are the memories and pride that a community took in one of its landmarks. And lost is the opportunity for future generations to enjoy and to learn from the places that help us understand and appreciate where we came from.
Destroying our past has costs that extend for beyond money. Lost is the work of talented craftsmen who created beautiful, lasting building. Lost are the memories and pride that a community took in one of its land marks. And lost is the opportunity for future generations to enjoy and to learn from the places that help us understand and appreciate where we came from.

EX,build Jingjiu railway,绕道了一段距离,避开了一个tomb of China’s Han dynasty more than 2000 years ago.
The styles of new buildings are required not undermine the aesthetic value of historical buildings.
7. In sum.
